Book cover for Entitlement by Rumaan Alam

If I knew that this was the same author as Leave the World Behind, I probably never would have picked this book up. It has a similar disorienting vibe. Entitlement is about a Black woman, Brooke, in New York who joins a non-profit funded by a very wealthy, older White man who is looking to put his money to good use before he dies. The proximity to money slowly poisons Brooke, who starts getting more and more emboldened by the idea that the man is going to choose her as a protégée, an idea that sends her towards indulging in grandiose delusions. I feel like the author was trying to make meaningful statements about race in this book, but in my opinion, it didn’t quite land. There were enough interesting ideas here to compel me to finish the book, but I ultimately found it to be a confusing let down.
