Notes
Another memoir about therapy, this one told from the perspective of a therapist as she goes to therapy herself to heal from a breakup. The story follows her therapy story as a client and also as practitioner as she shares anonymized stories of her own clients to give an interesting overview of therapy as a practice and as an opportunity for shared human connection. I borrowed this one from the library largely by accident (I was searching for an eBook that was available instantly), and I didn’t realize it was a memoir at first. So I was confused for the first bit of the book, and I didn’t expect to finish it liking it as much as I did. Highlighted quotes: “People want to be understood and to understand, but for most of us, our biggest problem is that we don’t know what our problem is. We keep stepping in the same puddle. Why do I do the very thing that will guarantee my own unhappiness over and over again?” “But many people come to therapy seeking closure. Help me not to feel. What they eventually discover is that you can’t mute one emotion without muting the others. You want to mute the pain? You’ll also mute the joy.”
