Notes
I learned about this book through a Broadening Participation in Computing (BPC) presentation given by a former professor of mine at a work meeting. I got it through interlibrary loan so I only had about a week to finish it, but I’d like to read it again more carefully in the future. One of the main takeaways I got from this book was that our work environments become better when we connect with our coworkers as people and recognize that everyone has interests and responsibilities outside of work. When our work relationships solely exist at a surface level, only those who are in the “in-group” thrive while others are pushed to the fringes and in some cases, forced to leave or quit. The author draws on her own experiences as a Black Queer woman in corporate America, as well as the experiences of others that she’s helped coach. This was a quick and approachable read, one that I could revisit again and the future and gain more insights from. It seems to me that the target audience is someone in a leadership position who wants to learn to connect better with the people they manage. Some of the takeaways felt out of reach to me because of that, but I would still recommend it to anyone in conflict with their workplace culture.
